From 2001 until 2005, Japan's Federal office for the conservation of cultural monuments conducted a programme of five years for the preservation of industrial monuments. Dr. Hans-Peter Bärtschi was invited as expert. During five railway journeys, he discovered the most important industrial monuments on the five largest islands and was allowed to visit the former and present American military sites in Tokyo, Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
