In 1991, an extended railway trip to Southern Africa’s gold, diamond and coal mines lead Dr. Hans-Peter Bärtschi to Zambia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and South Africa. In Northern Africa, he paid visits to the reinstalled mountain railways of Eritrea and Egypt, the 30 million conurbation of Cairo and the Egyptian Mediterranean coastal cities with its 15 million inhabitants.
