A four month trip led Dr. Hans-Peter Bärtschi to South America in 1973. He paid visits to different cities, the sum kingdoms, the highest situated railways worldwide and the Andes railway. Bärtschi found the international railway network still intact; in Argentina, Bolivia and Peru, steam traction was predominant. Years later, he made railway trips with the Andes railway to Ecuador, Chile and Mexico.
